MANSFIELD, OH- Downtown Mansfield celebrated the start of summer with several different events on Saturday.

The North Central Ohio All-American Soap Box Derby is held every year for the children of Richland and surrounding counties.  This year there were 35 cars entered in the race.

Assistant race director, Kerry Rich said that the event is a great way for children to both get outside during the summer as well as learning valuable life skills.

"It helps them learn how to use tools because they build the cars," Rich said.  "We had a day called builders day earlier this year and the kids come and put their cars together."

The Richland Carrousel Park took advantage of the beautiful weather on Saturday to honor first responders.  Throughout the day, first responders could ride free on the carrousel.

"We wanted to give back to the community," Co-Director of Richland Carrousel Park, Sharon Bishop said.  "First responders are such important people and we want to make sure they're recognized."

All of the summer fun meant lots of big smiles under sunny skies.  Rich said that the Soap Box Derby is known for good sportsmanship.

"We run probably one of the friendliest races in the country," Rich said.  "I've been to races in probably 10 or 12 different states and our race runs pretty smooth."
