MANSFIELD, OH - The Mansfield area YMCA held a ribbon cutting on Tuesday to introduce a new service being offered at the facility with the help of the Mansfield-Richland County Public Library. Members who use the facility will now be able to borrow books and movies from the library's collection - through a specialized vending machine, the only one of its kind in the Mansfield area.

Chris May, Director of the Mansfield-Richland Public Library, says the library was looking for new ways to connect with the community - specifically, those who are hard to reach or don't visit libraries often.

"People go to the YMCA, they go to the gym, and they may have to choose between doing that and going to the library," May said. "We wanted to bring the library to them and make it as easy as possible for them to use the library and to use it in a different way."

All members need is a library card, then they're able to make a selection and borrow their requested item. When borrowers are done with their item, returns are also made easy - a book drop is conveniently located next to the vending machine.

"You don't have to just return items from our vending unit," May said. "You can also return books you checked out from our other locations as well."

The vending machine includes different options for different ages. James Twedt, Vice President of Operations of the Mansfield YMCA, says both adults can take books and children can take books.

"It's just a great option for people in this area to be able to come here, check out a book, return it and maybe not have to go to the library and do so themselves," Twedt said.

The library vending machine is available during the Mansfield YMCA's normal operating hours.
