In honor of the nearly 200 police officers killed every year in the line of duty, local law enforcement officers held a Richland County Law Enforcement Memorial Service Thursday.

The event was held in conjunction with next week serving as National Police Week and with Police Officers Memorial Day May 15.

During the ceremony, Mansfield Police Chief Phil Messer, along with many law enforcement and local government officials, recognized the officers in Richland County who lost their lives.

In all, the county has lost five officers, with the most recent being Officer Brian Evans. Officer Evans was a fifteen-year veteran of the Mansfield Police Department and served on the SWAT and ASORT teams. He was shot and killed December 26, 2007.

Flags on all local government buildings will fly half-staff May 15 in honor of Police Officer's Memorial Day. The public is encouraged to do the same.
