Building upon a foundation of hope and faith is what led congregation members of First United Methodist Church in Ashland to see the culmination of a four-year process to open up its new education wing. A fire destroyed the building on September 6,2002, but it's been reconstructed and is now a state of the art facility. Building Committee Co-Chair Donna Weaver says it's wonderful to see the building finally open. Pastor Dan Bilkert remembers well the 2002 fire which destroyed the education building when contractors accidentally dropped a copper downspout onto electrical wires that energized the downspout and ignited a fire inside the attack. The new building now has 23,000 square feet of space with an open Rotunda, a library, several classrooms, restrooms and a chapel among other features. The new education building also reflects the church's past as the parlor room's fireplace mantle was salvaged from the building destroyed by fire, a reminder of what the power of hope and prayer can accomplish. First United Methodist Church is located the corner of Cottage and Sandusky Streets, just off of the downtown Ashland area.
