A hero's welcome was given Friday to a Lakeville soldier who lost his life last week serving in the military in Afghanistan.

The body of U.S. Army Spc. Damon Winkleman, 23, arrived home Friday morning at Mansfield Lahm Airport.

Area residents lined the roads of the procession carrying Winkleman's casket as it was taken from Lahm Airport led by a law enforcement escort.

The procession made its way onto U.S. 30 to Ohio 60 where it would be taken to Byerly-Lindsey Funeral Home in Loudonville in southern Ashland County.

Winkleman was a 2004 graduate of Loudonville High School. A U.S. Army medic, Winkleman died Sept. 20 from injuries he received in a non-combat, vehicle rollover accident in Zabul Province.
