A two-vehicle accident involving hazardous materials late Saturday afternoon in northern Ashland County sent three people to area hospitals and the evacuation of several people from their homes.

The Ashland State Highway Patrol says the accident happened at Ohio 58 and County Road 40 in Sullivan Township. The patrol says Deanne King, 54, of Elyria, was driving west on County Road 40 and failed to stop at the intersection, with her car striking a southbound semi on Ohio 58 driven by Scott Littleton, 58, of Elyria.

The semi, which overturned, was loaded with 34,000 pounds of organic hydrogen peroxide, which has explosive potential when mixed with diesel fuel. The area was cordoned off and several area residents were evacuated to the Sullivan Township Fire Department.

Several area fire departments, Ashland County Emergency Management, the sheriff's office and the Red Cross were on the scene. A remote controlled robot from the Lorain County Hazmat team also inspected the scene.

Littleton, King and her passenger, Sydney King, 14, were taken to Lodi Community Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
