State representative Jay Goyal of Mansfield says two Shelby schools have been recognized as the State Superintendent's Schools of Promise.

Auburn and Dowds Elementary Schools are two of only 134 schools in Ohio to receive the honor. Schools of Promise are academic institutions in Ohio that accomplish high levels of educational success despite having large populations of students at high poverty levels.

Forty-percent of the students at these schools are at or above federal poverty levels, and yet their student performance assessments are at or above 75 percent for the 2008-2009 school year.

Shelby Schools Supt. Bryan Neff said were are indeed proud of the academic achievement of all of our students no matter what their backgrounds or abilities might be. He adds, we are proud of our outstanding teachers, staff and administrators who make the extra effort to ensure every child has the necessary opportunities to succeed.
