The Ontario Board of Education Thursday signed a letter of intent with NexGen Energy of Boulder, Colorado, to place two wind turbines on school property.

Ontario Schools supt. Daryl Hall said one turbine will be located west of the high school and the other turbine will be located east of the elementary school.

Hall said the turbines will reduce the district's electricity costs. Hall said the district will save $40,000 the first year and after 10 years the district will save about $500,000.

The wind turbines would be 120 feet high and 14 feet in diameter. Each turbine costs $9,500.

Hall said NexGen will pay to convert the elementary school from primary to secondary electric at a cost of $50,000 to $70,000.

Hall said pending zoning approval from the Ontario Planning Commission and soil testing, the turbines could be in place by next school year.

The contract will be signed after the district's attorney reviews the details.
