A Weekend Of Jazz, Disney and Opera Music

MANSFIELD, OH -  On the campus of Ashland University, the department of music this week has been hosting a variety of small ensemble recitals to close the 2019 spring semester.

This coming Monday evening, April 23rd, several student ensembles will perform in a joint recital including a jazz combo, woodwind, brass and string ensembles under the direction of Dr. Thomas Reed, Joseph Lewis, Jr., and Jane Reed, respectively.

The concert will begin at 8pm. There is no admission to attend the event, it is free.


Mansfield’s premier jazz ensemble, the Mansfield Jazz Orchestra (MJO), will present its spring concert at the Richland Academy of the Arts on Friday, April 26th, at 7:00pm.

This will be the jazz orchestra’s third public performance and will spotlight the music of Woody Herman trombonist Vaughn Wiester and MJO’s artistic director Paul Martin.

Opening this concert will be Richland Academy Jazz Ensemble in their premier performance featuring students of the Academy from middle.

"Making God Laugh" the play follows one typical American family over the course of thirty years’ worth of holidays. As time passes, the family discovers that, despite what we may have in mind, we often arrive at unexpected destinations. No kidding!

Performances are slated for April 26th, 27th and May 3rd, 4th at 8:00 pm and May 5th at 2:30 pm.

Mid Ohio Opera presents..."Everyman" based on the play, which tells the story of a rich man who meets Death and laments over his life choices. 

This short piece, accompanied by a string quartet and piano, will be performed in addition to other works by Lexington native and former Richland County Commissioner, Rick Sowash. 

Sowash's classical music has been performed around the country. Mid-Ohio Opera fans and Sowash fans will have three opportunities to hear this concert:  the Mansfield Art Center, Friday, April 26, 7 p.m.; Zion Lutheran Church, Wooster, April 27, 2 p.m. and Mt. Auburn Presbyterian Church, in Cincinnati, Sunday, April 28, 11 a.m.

All of the music, all of the drama, none of the cost! (The concert is free to attend). 


Lea Solonga is the voice of two Disney Princesses (Mulan and Jasmine) and is an official Disney Legend. Salonga will bring powerful vocals and beauty to the Renaissance stage for one night only April 29th for a show at 8 p.m.  

Salonga is a singer and actress who is best known for her Tony Award winning role in Miss Saigon. Growing up in the Phillipines, she never aspired to be a princess, but all that changed with her journey into musical theatre.
