MANSFIELD, OH - As part of its 150th year anniversary, the Mansfield Area Y held a special ceremony in front of its building at 750 Scholl Road.

And, as WMFD's Larry Stine reports, it was just in time for the annual observance of Flag Day.

For the past 17 years, the Mansfield Area Y has been at its present location, it has never had a flag pole or flag,

But through a generous donation by a member, who is a veteran of the armed forces, a flag pole and flag now adorns the landscaping front of the Mansfield Area Y.

"It was a dream of mine that came true today and we've had some wonderful help and with the help of a generous friend and member and donor, Kim Magers," says Mansfield Area Y President/CEO Cristen Gilbert. "He's a wonderful friend, a real 'Y' guys who loves being here every single day and is a veteran and I thank him and all of our military veterans for their service and that's what really this flag represents today."

The American Legion Color Guard performed the official flag raising ceremony with preschoolers from the Y's Child Care reciting the Pledge of Allegiance for those in attendance.

Some feel the value of the American Flag has diminished in recent years, but not according to older veterans.

"They're all still very patriotic, in fact, sometimes it runs in my mind, maybe the military outta be in charge of the country because there would've discipline and honesty and fairness and the core values of the military," says Burk Jisa, Richland County Marines Commandant. "This obviously is not going to happen but we'd like to see a more decency and respect for the flag."

"It's just such a nice way to thank everybody for their service," Gilbert says. "To recognize this amazing country we're a part of and a beautiful community hub like this needs to have something like that flying every day."

The official flag raising is a fitting tribute to a community mainstay as the Mansfield Area Y continues to celebrate its 150th birthday.
