MANSFIELD, OH - The Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center hosted the Tri-County Spelling Bee on Thursday night, incorporating students from Crawford, Richland, and Morrow Counties.

12 students were selected per county representing schools such as Lexington, Crestview, Lucas, Madison, Mansfield Christian, and more. The 8th-grade students who placed first and second in the competition were both Lexington students - sisters Katie Sheridan and Maggie Sheridan. Maggie, one of three sisters, participated in the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

While the Tri-County Spelling Bee isn't affiliated with the Scripps National Spelling Bee, Mid-Ohio ESC Gifted Coordinator Jenny Pennell believes that it's an important step that helps students get ready for the national stage in Washington, DC.

"I believe we had a particularly difficult list this year," said Pennell. "It's a really wonderful way for our students to get that extra practice spelling in front of a crowd, and a little bit of extra practice with some difficult words."

Students are now preparing to compete in the official Regional Spelling Bee, held by Scripps. The Scripps Regional Spelling Bee begins in April.
