GALION, OH - The Galion City Health Department has announced that it will continue mosquito control activities in the community using grant funds received from the Ohio EPA.

The grant funds will help the Galion City Health Department protect human health from potential mosquito-borne diseases.

From May through October, the department will be conducting mosquito surveillance by trapping and testing adult mosquitos for diseases such as Zika and West Nile. Traps are expected to be placed in each city park and near standing bodies of water.

Residents are asked to not tamper with the traps.

In 2017, the department found that 6 out of 50 pooled samples tested positive for West Nile Virus.

The city is currently planning to spray for adult mosquitoes based on results of the surveillance program this summer. The results will show which areas contain high-volume breeding for mosquitos.
