RICHLAND COUNTY, OH - The Richland County Sheriff's Office is warning members of the public to be wary of threatening letters that claim to represent the "Bureau of Tax Enforcement."

In the fake letters, the sender threatens the receiver with garnishment of wages, property seizure, federal tax refund offsets, and creation of property liens if "back taxes" aren't paid. The scam relies on recipients being unsuspecting and fearful, and letters claim they are "Distraint Warrants" for back taxes.

If you, a friend, or a family member receive a letter similar to this, please report the incident to the Richland County Sheriff's Office, or contact the Ohio Attorney General's Office to report the scam.
