MANSFIELD, OH - Multiple years may have passed, but Collier Landry still remembers the events that transpired when he was 11-years-old.

December 30th, 1989. The date will forever bring Collier memories of an event that he wishes never transpired.

"I went to bed by eight o'clock, kissed my mother goodnight... and didn't know that that was the last time I was going to see her." Collier said.

Collier's mother, Noreen, was murdered by his father, Dr. John Boyle, that night. Collier heard the murder and would become a witness for the prosecution.

"I woke up at about 3:15 A.M to the sound of two thuds, and then about 12 footsteps walking down the hallway which stopped at my doorway," Collier explained. "I was really terrified... I was awake and could see feet at the corner of my door, in the doorway... I knew that if I had looked up, I would not be here today."

The next morning, the truth sank into Collier: he knew his mother was dead.

Boyle was arrested by the end of January. The body of Noreen was found in a home that Collier's father purchased near Erie, Pennsylvania. The case then went to trial with the result of Boyle being convicted of murder.

Collier is the co-creator of  the documentary "A Murder In Mansfield". The documentary, directed by Barbara Kopple, examines the consequesnes of violence and trauma, with a focus on the murder trial.

"The documentary started as a potential pilot for a television series on the consequences of violence," Collier explained.

After pitching the story to Barbara Kopple, a two time Academy Award Winner, they then pitched the idea to the Discovery Channel.  The pitch ended up being a feature documentary production.

"It was very important for me in making the film to show genuine vulnerability and authenticity of what we were trying to capture on camera." Collier stated.

Collier says he wants the documentary to show people who had went through adversity that they can get through it. His goal was to just change one life, but he thinks he ended up changing more.

A Murder In Mansfield has played in over 50 film festivals world wide. Investigation Discover debuted the film in November of 2018.

Collier was invited to the NCSC Hall of Excellence awards program Friday evening as this year's Keynote speaker on Overcoming Adversity.

Two recipients were recognized for awards: Jeff Gorman of Gorman Rupp and Dr. Joseph Shadeed - both contributors to  communities they care about, family and education.

Chelley Kemper of WMFD/Mix 106.1 was the program emcee.
