UPDATE: Law Enforcement Continues Search For Escaped Inmate

WAYNE COUNTY, OH - UPDATE - Law enforcement officials are continuing to search for inmate Said Ali El-Khatib who escaped from custody at around 8:58 pm on Friday night.

The Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force and local law enforcement are currently searching at and around the rest area on I-71 near the 198-mile marker where El-Khatib escaped from. 

According to a press release from the U.S. Marshals Service, El-Khatib was being transported on a private transport vehicle that was passing through Wayne County on its way to Indiana.  When the vehicle stopped at a rest area on I-71 near the 198-mile marker, the prisoner, 33-year-old Said El-Khatib, seized an opportunity to escape custody and ran into the woods near the highway. 

El-Khatib was being transported from New York to Indiana after a larceny arrest.  He also has a warrant from the Ashland Police Department for larceny and has been wanted since 2014.

El-Khatib is 6'1" and weighs 165 lbs.  He was last seen wearing tan pants and a tan shirt with no writing.

In a press release, The U. S. Marshals Service advises the public to be extra cautious: 

Police are asking residents to remain vigilant in locking their homes, barns and any out buildings.  They should also be locking their cars and keep valuables out of sight in their vehicles.  Residents are further urged to call police if they notice anything missing from their homes or barns, such as clothes, boots or food.

Anyone with information regarding the whereablouts of a known fugitive is encouraged to contact the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force at: 1-866-4-WANTED or text the keyword WANTED and the tip to TIP411 (847411) or call the Ohio State Highway Patrol Wayne County Post at 330-264-0575.

El-Khatib is considered dangerous and has a history with firearms.  If seen, do not approach, call 911 immediately.
