RICHLAND COUNTY, OH - Community leaders and veterans gathered Friday morning at the Richland County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board office in downtown Mansfield for a special event to mark the beginning of May - Mental Health Month.

The event featured a ceremonial flag raising, a prayer, as well as a presentation, delivered by Richland County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board President Joe Trolian.

Among those in attendance were Randy Hutchinson and Tim Theaker, Mayors of Ontario and Mansfield, respectively. Captain Noblet of the Mansfield Police Department was on hand, as well as representatives from other community organizations.

Trolian's presentation revealed that in the 2018 fiscal year, his board served 9,626 people, which comes out to just under 10% of the population of Richland County. Trolian estimates that between his board's work and the work of the many grassroots and independent mental health and recovery organizations working in Richland County, the number of citizens being served is actually much higher.

Joe says this month is all about awareness of the array of services and service organizations in the Richland County community. "We don't take enough time to really emphasize the idea of keeping yourself mentally healthy. Its the same thing you would do with excersize. If you don't go out and excersize and eat right, do the things you need to do, then you're dealing with an actual illness. There are a lot of things you can do to prevent that."

Joe told WMFD the goal for this month is simple: he wants the community to 'Know It Before You Need It.' "The underlying piece that I would like the community to have is to know what services are available, not just when they're in crisis, but ahead of time."
