MANSFIELD, OH - Saint Peters' graduating class of 2019 received their scholarship and awards at a ceremony Thursday afternoon, and during the event two students swore to serve in the Ohio Air National Guard.

The Ohio Air National Guard has a long-standing tuition assistance program, which is providing those two students with over $110,000 each. Avery Hatfield and Nate Schemine stood before their peers, raised their hands, and swore to uphold the laws of the United States, after which they were handed a check that would pay for their college educations.

Hatfield and Schemine will participate in 15 training days annually in preparation to serve in the military. According to retired Lieutenant Colonel Jeff Charette of the Ohio Air National Guard, Hatfield and Schemine will most likely be deployed overseas at least once in their six-year careers.

"I think it's really motivational and it's also inspirational, because it's about these two students, and about what they're committing to and going to be willing to give of themselves for the U.S. military and U.S. citizens and the country in general," Charette said of the ceremony.
