ONTARIO, OH- The 50th Annual Avenue of Flags honored fallen heroes at Mansfield Memorial Park on Sunday afternoon.

VFW 9943's Auxiliary President, Joyce Sparks, said that the ceremony helps to honor those local U.S. soldiers who make the ultimate sacrifice.

"It commemorates the deceased that are interred here at Mansfield Memorial Park and we read off the name of every one of them to honor them, so it's a pretty special ceremony for us," Sparks said.

This year the Avenue of Flags was made even more precious as it was the event's 50th year.

"This year is our 50th Anniversary which is kind of special and we feel very blessed that we've been able to continue this for 50 years," Sparks said.

Overall, Sparks said  that the event is meant to honor the true reason we celebrate Memorial Day, and the brave men and women who serve our country.

"These Veterans give so much, so this is our way of honoring and remembering them and thanking them for the freedom that we have today," Sparks said.
